easterner asked:

We have an air to air (i.e. not ground source) heat pump with additional heating coils. I have replaced the filter and reset the thermostat. The fan works but the unit will only pump our hot air. Any suggestions on which part might be affected?

Xar asked:

A heat pump on a house operates with a COP that is 35% of the theoretical maximum, between exterior and interior temperatures of −12°C and 34°C. How much work must be done on the heat engine to supply 2200 J of heat to the interior of the house? (in J)

Thus far, my two responses of 5.1E3 J and 4.2E4 J has been incorrect :(. Can anyone help ?

Dick Tater asked:

I have a Kenmore heat pump that yesterday stopped heating. I thought that it went into reverse mode to defrost. However, this was not the case. Air was coming through the vent, but when I looked at the top of the heat pump, the fan was not turning. This had me confused. So, I know that the main fan is not working, but what about the lack of heat. I know that heat mode is reverse AC mode - could it be a Freon leak?

zarn asked:

We’re looking at eco-friendly heating (central heating & hot water) for our home. We plan to use a solar panel, but given variable weather in the UK will also need another source. A heat pump looks very attractive, especially if used with carbon-free electricity, which we have.

Is there any reason that this isn’t a good solution?

Are there any disadvantages compared to ground source heat pumps?

thepavman asked:

I have a Friedrich PTAC model #PDH15K - manual indicates we can use this with any “24v single stage remote wall mounted thermostat”.

I want to use a Hunter 44360 programmable thermostat, the specs say it can be used with a single stage heat pump.

The PTAC has the following connections specified in the manual:
C - Common Ground
W - Call for Heating
Y - Call for Cooling
R - 24v Power from Unit
GL - Call for Low Fan*
GH - Call for High Fan*
B - Reversing Valve Energized in heating mode
*Either ONE of GL or GH may be hooked up, they don’t both have to be used.

The thermostat has the following connections:
G - Fan
RH - 24 Volt
RC - 24 Volt Cool
Y/O - A/C compressor
W/B - Heating
Y1 - Heat Pump compressor

I called Friedrich tech support. They insist this needs SINGLE STAGE heat pump thermostat. I called Hunter tech support, they insited this must be multi-stage heat pump due to the wires I described to them.

What wires need to be hooked up to which terminals?

need help asked:

It is 19 degrees out and I have a heat pump that is not working efficiently (or so I think). I have the temperature set at 75 degrees but it is only heating at 68 degrees. Is this pretty normal for heat pumps or do I need mine checked by a technician?
