How cool can my air conditioner get my house, compared to the temperature outside?

kell bell asked:
My air conditioner has been set on 60 degrees all day and my house is still 80 degrees.
It was about 97 degrees today, it is a central unit, very old but I am just hoping I don’t have to replace it since it is so costly. Thanks for all of your answers!

Does central air conditioner work less efficiently when it’s hot outside?

I have a new central air conditioner. Normally, it cools down the house 5 min per degree, so it takes around 25 min to lower the temperature from 80 to 75 degrees upstairs. I have 2 floors. Today, I went out to run errands and didn’t get back until 1pm, when it became 91 degrees outside and 85 degrees inside. I kept the AC on for several hours, and it didn’t cool the house below 78 degrees until 9pm.

Does the AC work less effectively when it’s really hot outside, and the coils don’t cool off very fast in 90 degree heat? Is that why it didn’t go below 78 degrees inside till night time?
Is there such as thing as a super-hot day when even a 3.5 ton AC gets overwhelmed? Is there any point to “staying ahead” by turning the AC on at 11am if we think a hot one is coming in order to start cooling earlier before the house gets really hot?

The air conditioner in my home seems to be blowing cold air, it feels cold anyway. But our thermometer doesn’t get below 80 or higher. I checked the filter and replaced it but that does not do anything. Can anyone clue me in on anything?

I’d like a small, lightweight, cheap, and quiet air conditioner that blows cold air out of a hose. It just has to be enough to keep my sleeping bag cool.
I have access to 120V AC. I just don’t have a lot of room.

I have a chevy venture 2000. Recently, the air conditioner blows hot air even when the knob is turned on cold section and the ac light is on. Some one told me to change the freon but I don’t know where the freon container is located and how to replace it. Is there any one who has any suggestions?
Thanks.

How high should the air conditioner register at depending on the weather outside?

sweet_caligirl1978 asked:
It’s about 103 degrees outside, the air conditioner is registering at 89 degrees. Is that normal? It may be a dumb question but it just seems like it should be cooler in here no matter what. I know it’s working hard but 89 degrees. It’s so hot in here.

The high pressure line on my central air conditioner, is cool to the touch when the air conditioning is running. I’ve been told that when the compressor is running the high pressure line should be warm or hot. Any ideas what this could mean?
