what happens when an air conditioner condensate line clogs? what kinda professional do i call if it is?
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
i have a wet carpet that has been eating through towels for a couple of months now in a certain area of my house, and only in a certain area in my house. i have a central air conditioner and only a one story house.
this has been going on for a few months now and i know mold is there.
i’ve tried my hand at drying the carpet and to my dismay, it soaks up again the next day.
with extensive amounts of Google searches, after suspecting that the mold is catching up to my cough that could progressively amplify, i suspect that it may be a Air Conditioner Condensation Line drip.
i watched that video of the professional guy and it might be it.
and,
what kind of professional do I call about fixing a condensation line. A plumber?
and
who would I call about getting rid of the mold?
The wet carpet leak is adjacent with the bathroom (door), so I’m assuming it would be rather moist I’m 100% positive that the wet carpet isn’t the restroom (putting that out there so as it isn’t brought up as a possible cause).
But I do need to know, if anybody might know if it is coming from the FLOOR or the CEILING ?, because if it would be a condensation clog, wouldn’t it come from the ceiling?

What causes a window air conditioner to freeze up in the front where you can see ice on it?
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
What causes a window air conditioner to freeze up in the front where you can see ice on it? My husband sprayed water in the front of the a/c to clean it. He said that it was freezing up before he cleaned it with water that is why he cleaned it. What do you think? How can we get it to stop freezing up? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Use of Air Conditioners and the Greenhouse Effect
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
As the average temperature of the planet rises every year we also have started using the air conditioner more. The result is that we are heating up the environment even more. What happens is, whenever we turn on the air conditioner, it releases carbon into the air. And carbon has been identified as the element that insulates our planet and is a major contributor in global warming.
And if we are to believe recent studies, the worse is yet to come. Actually we have got into this vicious loop where the hotter it gets, the more of air conditioning we use, and consequently the earth gets even hotter.
If we look at the figures, we can understand that the average world temperature of the Earth has increased by 1 degree Fahrenheit in just the last century. Though it might sound minimal, it is actually a remarkable change. Scientists believe that much of this global warming can be attributed to the release of carbon dioxide and other green house gases which are released when we burn the conventional fossil fuels. What is being predicted is that the practice will continue for the coming years and it will only increase with time.
Compared to most other electric devices, the air conditioner consumes much more energy. So to keep the air conditioners running a lot of fossil fuels need to be used. Whenever you have your air conditioner working at full blast you should realize that you are contributing in your own way to the global warming.
If we account for all the power consumed by air conditioners alone across the country it would be something around half percent of the total energy that is used in by the United States. This seems a rather small figure. However, the problem is even half percent can make a serious contribution to the phenomenon of global warming.
Another problem is that the consumption of energy and hence the release of the greenhouse gases are not the same all over the country. So, particular areas are more affected than the rest.
Till the day we can use alternative forms of energy in a wide scale, turning on the air conditioner will always mean that the earth will be affected. The only way to limit the damage is by using high energy efficient air conditioners which require less power to run, and to keep the use of the air conditioners to the minimum level possible.

Where can I find an air-conditioner I can mount on interior wall?
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Where can I find an air-conditioner I can mount on interior wall? It’s about 6 feet from a basement window.
It’s in a basement and I can’t use the window. Would like to mount an air conditioner on one wall and vent it out thru a window near my furnace.

My air conditioner compressor is blocked by bushes touching the unit in the front is this a problem?
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
I live in a condo and I noticed today that someone planted bushes right in front of my compressor to the air conditioner so they touch the uint. The bushes are only in the front and not on the sides or in the back. Will this cut down on the efficiency of the air conditioner because one side is blocked by these bushes which touch the unit.?

Keeping Cool With Window Air Conditioner
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
With the onset of warm weather, we start looking up for various ways to keep ourselves and our surroundings cool. One of the most common and efficient methods is air conditioning. There are various kinds of air conditioners available like room air conditioner, central conditioner and portable air conditioners having their own purposes. But if you looking for an air conditioner to place it in your room and other small places then it has to be window air conditioners. They are a kind of room air conditioners which are designed to fit in a window without taking much space. Their working is same as that of any other room conditioners. Window air conditioners are designed for people who can’t afford central air conditioning or have room specific air conditioning needs. And other reason for choosing window air conditioners over central air conditioners is that the later ones are very expensive and require a lot of maintenance.
Window air conditioners have two coils, hot coil and chilled coil fitted with two fans. These fans blow air over the coils which suck the humidity and heat present in the room and throw it out in the outside area. This process keeps the air in the room cool, clear and free of humidity. The cooling power of an air conditioner is calculated in BTUs that stands for British Thermal Units. The BTUs of an air conditioner depends on its size which is an important factor in deciding an air conditioner for a room. A normal window air conditioner won’t do any good to a large room so choose an air conditioner according to the room size.
Another feature of an air conditioner which depends on the room size is its tonnage and there are various denominations available like 0.60, 0.75, 1, 1.5 and 2 tons. As the tonnage increases, the price and power of the air conditioners increases. So, these two attributes should be kept in mind while buying a window air conditioner. Another major concern while purchasing a window air conditioner is the electricity bill which adds up to huge amount. While buying a window unit always look for models having higher energy efficiency. Models having higher EER are more efficient as they will decrease you electricity bill. It is measured in terms of Energy Efficiency Rating which needs to be displayed on all models sold in US market. A model having an EER of 10 would use around 20% less energy then the model having EER of 8.
It is also advisable to tell your dealer some other details like your budget, room size, and thickness of the wall, size and number of windows and any other electrical appliances in the room which will help him to give you a good deal at affordable price. Window air conditioners nowadays come with additional features like quiet operation function, timers, dehumidification, air filters, remote control and thermostat sensitivity. Be wise enough and do proper market research before buying a window air conditioner as there are many brands available each promising to give you the best at the most competitive price.

Is the air conditioner suppossed to run even when the thermostat is set to off?
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Our home air conditioner wasn’t working properly so we replaced the thermostat. After we replaced it the system worked correctly. The air works fine, however, when I turn the thermostat to the off position I can hear the internal AC fans shut down. When I check the outside unit the system is still running. Even if it’s been off for over an hour. Is this normal? If not what could be wrong?

Air Conditioners and Health Issues
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
We are so concerned about the comfort that air conditioners provide us that we hardly ever look at what kind of health implications the air conditioners might have. However, if we spend some time on the topic, we can understand that air conditioners can be considered both as a boon and a bane, depending upon the circumstances. Let us consider the positive health implications of an air conditioner first.
These days air conditioners have a much improved technology and the basic principle in which it functions allows it to significantly improve the quality of the air. Through the various processes like filtration, humidification, cooling, disinfection etc. the air conditioner actually provides us with a much cleaner and safer air to breathe. So someone having severe allergic problems, would be much better of in a room air conditioned. People suffering from asthma would also be benefited. Even for operations that are conducted, the air conditioner allows a climate where the infections can be controlled and the environment would be safe for the patients. Without air conditioners, many critical operations would have been just too risky.
Places where we have severe heat waves, air conditioners can actually save the lives of the elderly. In fact, local authorities at many places actually build facilities with air conditioners so that those without ones can actually seek refuge in one of these shelters during the time of an acute heat wave.
However, air conditioning can also be held responsible for a few health problems. If the central air conditioning system in an office or in a home is not properly maintained, then it can actually facilitate the spread of microorganisms. These can include Legionella pneumophila, a microorganism responsible for Legionnaire’s disease.
Air conditioning units can generate sounds to which when someone is exposed over a considerably long period of time can lead to the individual’s hear loss. To provide an analogy, being exposed to the sound of an air conditioner constantly is like living near an air port or a busy highway.
There have also been claims, that excessive use of air conditioners can actually cause someone to grow fat. Some researchers maintain that with regulated temperatures our body stops adjusting to the temperature changes and since there is a cessation of effort on the part of our body we burn less calories and hence more fat gets accumulated. Such claims need to be clarified better.
