Whats the best way to winterize a window air conditioner?
Also what is the purpose of winterizing? Is it to keep cold air out? Or does it protect the air conditioner itself?
Thanks for the info.

How do I clean my wall mounted air conditioner?

Enceladus asked:
I live in Japan, and my air conditioner hasn’t been heating very well recently. Sometimes it shuts off by itself, but today, it just hasn’t been giving warm air. I have a feeling that the filter needs to be replaced. It’s a rather standard wall mounted air conditioner made by Mitsubishi that is common in Japanese apartments. Any ideas?

Applications of an Air Conditioner

Barney Garcia asked:
Since the days Willis Carrier introduced us to the device of air conditioners to the present, the device has pervaded almost all aspects of our life. They can be found in almost all facets of our life. From our bedroom, to our office, from the schools our children go to, to the malls we go for our shopping. It is everywhere we look at. This would make us wonder how wide ranging would be the applications of air conditioners.
The indoor and outdoor units of a ductless air conditioner are linked with a conduit. Within the conduit is the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and condensate drain. While the compressor which creates a whole lot of noise is in the outdoor unit, the quieter parts of the air conditioner – the fan and the evaporator are in the indoor unit.
If you ask an expert like an air conditioner engineer as to what are the applications of the device he would answer that it can be divided into two broad categories: – Comfort and – Process
When an air conditioner is meant for comfort applications its main job would be to provide a constant temperature indoors whatever may be the fluctuations of weather outside. It would also be able to deal with any change of temperature due to internal heat loads. The temperature maintained by these air conditioners is in the range where humans feel comfortable as these air conditioners are manufactured to provide comfort to humans.
Comfort air conditioners have allowed humans to build deep buildings where otherwise you wouldn’t have fresh air flowing in. The only way out was by building light wells. But with a central air conditioner in place you can actually cover as much horizontal floor space as you want and need not worry about ventilation. Air conditioners have also allowed humans to build extremely tall buildings. With air turbulence unpredictable at extreme heights, ventilating high rises would not have been feasible. With air conditioners one can do away with that problem.
Comfort air conditioners are again of two types – for residential buildings and for commercial buildings.
Process air conditioning is meant to maintain a constant temperature irrespective of the weather outside or the internal heat loads. However, even under process air conditioning the temperature is generally within the comfort range. But it must be understood that in process air conditioning it is the process and not what you and I prefer that would determine the temperature that is maintained.
When an open heart surgery is performed the temperature maintained is about 18 degree Celsius or 64 degree Fahrenheit. For a neonatal operation again the temperature maintained is pretty higher – something around 28 degree Celsius or 82 degree Fahrenheit.
So the applications are pretty wide ranging.

What to Look Out for in Eco Friendly Air Conditioners
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Stephen Haworth asked:
Did you know that an air conditioning unit can omit 1.34lbs of carbon dioxide for every kilowatt hour used? By replacing older air conditioning units you could save several hundreds of pounds of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere each summer season. This will not only save the environment but also save you some green as well. You can save as much as $65 using a newer air conditioning unit verses an older air conditioning unit.
When you are looking for a new air conditioning unit you will need to first look for the proper size unit for your living space. The amount of space an air conditioning unit cools is measured in BTU’s. BTU’s stands for British Thermal Units. When you are looking for an air conditioning unit you will first need to decide the number of BTU’s that the air conditioner will need to cool your living space. You can calculate the required BTU’s by multiplying the square footage of the space by 10. You will then need to add 4,000 to that number. By choosing the proper size air conditioner for the space it will allow you to conserve energy. If you choose an air conditioner too large for the area or too small for the area then you will be causing unneeded drain on your electricity.
When looking for a new air conditioner unit you will also want to shop for one with an energy star approval on it. Energy Star approval is a label given to a product by the Environmental Protection Agency. This insures that the product is 10 percent more efficient than what is required by the minimum federal standards.
You will also want to look for a unit that can dehumidify the air as well if you live in a humid climate. By using an air conditioner that dehumidifies the air you will be able to make the environment more comfortable by reducing the humidity. This will allow you to keep the air conditioner at a lower setting and still feel comfortable.
You can also be eco friendly when using your new air conditioner as well. Use your air conditioner wisely to reduce electric bills as well as reducing the CO2 emissions caused by the use of electricity. By setting your air conditioner to a lower setting making it comparable to the temperatures outdoors rather than what you want it to feel like. This will make going outdoors during the summer months more enjoyable as well. Use the fan only option on the air conditioner at night to reduce the amount of electricity you use.
Many air conditioners also come with a recirculation option. This allows the air that has already been cooled to be recirculated around your home. You should have your air conditioning unit properly installed and sealed around the area to ensure you do not have cool air leaking outside. Finally be sure to clean and check the filters on your air conditioning unit regularly. Many air conditioners only need to be cleaned every 3 months but depending on the area you live in you may need to clean it as often as every month. This will help keep your air conditioning running more efficiently as well as keep you and your family more healthy.
Keeping you home cool during the summer can be a life safer but can also be dangerous on the environment. By keeping energy cost low and using the most efficient units possible you can not only save money on energy cost but also save the environment while keeping cool. Be sure to recycle your old air conditioning units. There are even some governments that will give rebates for old air conditioning units that are turned in.This program can save you as much as $75 per unit you replace.

Room Air Conditioners are Efficient
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Susan Slobac asked:
If you live in an area of the country where it gets extraordinarily hot during the summer months, you know that air conditioning is crucial to your comfort. Air conditioning can also prove very useful in rooms that contain computer equipment, such as servers, in order to keep all of the electrical equipment cooled off so that it continues to function properly. It can be costly to install and then run a permanently mounted air conditioner, yet a portable room air conditioner provides an efficient solution for your seasonal cooling needs.
One benefit you will receive from using a portable room air conditioner is that you can position it exactly where you need it. Because it moves on smooth-rolling casters, it is a simple matter to change its position to the best advantage around your home or office. For example, a portable air conditioner can help you start your day with pleasant cool air in your kitchen along with your first cup of coffee. Kitchens typically get rather hot with stoves and dishwashers going, and can be unpleasant to work in. Bring the pleasure back with a portable room air conditioner that cools your kitchen off so you can cook in comfort.
It can be costly using a permanent air conditioner because it tends to work on an entire floor of a house or building, so you have to cool the entire area whether you are using particular rooms or not in order to get the benefit where you need it. Not so with a portable room air conditioner. Because it can be positioned exactly where you need the cool air, you will save money by not cooling other areas that will not benefit from the cooling. A computer room, holding your all-important server, requires fans and air conditioners that will be on and working when the servers and computers are working, in order to keep everything performing at optimal levels without melting down electrical components. A portable air conditioner can be focused where the cool air will be most useful, and thus will save you money by not expanding the cooling effect to where it is not needed.
You simply pay for what you use when it comes to portable room air conditioners. Because when the weather warms up we often spread our living spaces to the outdoors, a portable room air conditioner can be used to great effect in covered outdoor situations as well. Your screened porch just got a new lease on life, because you can keep it enjoyable at just the right temperature level. A portable room air conditioner is your efficient way to cool just the areas you need, when you need it.

Solar Powered Air Conditioners – Advantages of Using Solar Air Conditioners
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Ricky Lim asked:
In today’s world, there has been an increase in the power consumption thereby leading to lesser resources and energy fuels. Due to the increase in the use of artificial sources of energy, the various resources are getting depleted. The need for alternate sources of energy was the answer to all this.
Solar energy is one of the natural sources of energy that are now widely used for several purposes. The solar powered air conditioners are one of the uses of the solar energy. The solar air conditioners are powered by the energy of the sun. The energy of the sun is efficiently collected in thermal panels which are in the form of a tube that is evacuated.
This energy from the sun is then received at the solar powered chiller with the help of an anti freeze like the solution of glycol. It is done through a set of pipes, pumps and controlling mechanisms that are all designed carefully.
The usage of solar powered air conditioners is not new. They have been used in the United States from the early twentieth century. It is indeed a well known technological usage. The commercial use of the solar air conditioners has been increasing in the past few years as electricity bills rises.
In countries like Japan and India where the cost of the electricity is very high, the solar powered air conditioners are used as an option to save energy and also to reduce the electricity costs. Not only are they simple, but they are also very dependable.
The major advantage of these air conditioners is the fact that there are no harmful chemicals that are used. Only naturally available solar energy is used. Because the air conditioners work on the naturally available solar energy they have a low operating costs and also the return on the investment is many folds.
Though the initial cost of setting up solar air conditioners is very high, these costs can be got back in a year because of the great reduction in the electricity costs. Thus solar powered air conditioners are an effective way of reducing costs and also to save energy.
