HVAC system and closing vents for extended periods of time?
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Shawn G asked:
I’ve heard that it’s bad to close off vents for extended periods of time … that an HVAC system is meant to handle the SQ footage that it was installed for and that shutting off vents can cause harm to the system. Is this true? I may be moving into a large house that has way more rooms than I will use and want to conserve power by shutting off the vents and closing the doors to rooms I will not use. What say you HVAC experts?

How much space should I leave between a piece of furniture and an HVAC return duct?

I want to place a piece of furniture on a wall that has an HVAC return duct (that is poorly placed near the floor). Is that a terrible idea, and if I must do it, how much space should I leave between the duct and the furniture piece?

I know the typical home improvement stores have some of the smaller items, but where can I get 14″ Flex, and 14″ tri-wyes… I found a place online American HVAC parts, but their prices seem a little steep, and I would like to purchase locally if possible. Any suggestions?

Finding Fast and Reliable Heating and Cooling Services in Houston
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Scott HVAC Thompson asked:
Are you looking for a fast and reliable heating and cooling services in Houston? Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) contractors provide quality residential and commercial installation and services. Most of the HVAC contractors have inventory in place to meet your commercial and residential air conditioning cooling and heating needs without delay. HVAC contractors have different terms of service. Some may offer one year parts and labor guarantee. Others will even replace or repair any defective parts or materials that they installed for a period of up to one year at no charge to their customers.
Houston air conditioning and heating services may include chiller repairs, AC repairs, as well as replacement and remodeling and other related services depending on your needs whether commercial or residential. Finding fast and reliable heating and cooling services in Houston is never that hard. Some Houston HVAC contractors have a website and if you need a prompt service you can send your request through their websites, just find their contact information. You can reach them also through their emails or fax or you can even contact them by phone.
On the other hand, some contractors have technicians that are not paid on commission which means they are not motivated to run up a large repair invoice so they are paid more. Trusted and qualified HVAC contractors have better trained technicians to cater your needs. They have perfected the heating, ventilating and air conditioning cooling services industry.
It would be good if you find a contractor that are NATE certified and a member of Air Conditioning Contractors of America. NATE (North American Technician Excellence) is a national testing organization for HVAC technicians like an MBA degree for HVAC technicians. NATE exams reflect a consensus opinion of what technicians need to know to effectively serve and install today’s most advanced and sophisticated HVAC systems. Be sure to find technicians who are trained to locate and fix the problems quickly. Look for the certified HVAC contractors as you can be sure of a quality service you want.

The Ultimate Trane Hvac System Deal
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Alan King asked:
When shopping for an HVAC system, it is important to consider the operating cost over the unit’s lifespan as well as comfort and reliability. A key factor which determines the operating cost of the system is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which is a measure of how energy efficient the system is. Another measure of efficiency specifically used for heat pumps is the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF). Currently, the Trane XL19i Ultra Efficiency Heat Pump has one of the highest energy efficiency ratings in the industry, with a SEER of 17.90 and an HSPF of 9.0, which is high enough to qualify for a US Energy Tax Credit. When matched with a variable speed indoor air handler, this unit also has special comfort-enhancing capabilities. Additionally, the reliability of every Trane HVAC system deal is backed up by a 10-year limited warranty from the manufacturer.
Consumer’s Digest has awarded the Trane XL19i with the title of “Best Buy” in the premium category for heat pumps. There are a few features that make this one of the best deals on the market. The XL19i takes advantage of Trane’s Comfortlink II communicating capability when matched with indoor air handlers with the same capability. This technology allows all the different components of the system to be automatically configured and calibrated for maximum efficiency and performance. Comfortlink II also has an optional telephone access module which can allow the user to remotely receive updates and adjust settings on the system by phone.
Trane’s 2/4TEE Variable Speed Air Handler is an important key to this system’s ability to provide enhanced comfort levels. Most air handlers on the market only have three speeds, but the 2/4TEE has twelve. This allows for much finer control of airflow depending on the heating and cooling needs of your indoor environment. When configured with the XL19i, this system provides all the features of Trane’s Comfort-R technology which reduces variation in air temperature and results in better humidity control. This is done in part by allowing for warmer airflow during start up by reducing the fan speed, and thus minimizing fluctuations in the temperature of the air coming from vents. The XL900 Deluxe Programmable Digital Thermostat links all the components together through a clear and easy to use menu driven display to allow for care free operation.
But, to really make this the ultimate Trane HVAC system deal we must include the revolutionary CleanEffects air filtration system. CleanEffects can remove 99.98% of airborne allergens and 99% of flu virus from indoor air. This is eight times more effective than the best HEPA filters, but what makes it so revolutionary is that it does this without sacrificing energy efficiency. HEPA filter technology relies upon very small pores in the filter medium, which increases the air pressure drop across the filter and causes energy efficiency to suffer. CleanEffects does this without reducing airflow, resulting in greater comfort and allowing for more efficient use of energy.
Trane has engineered all of the components of this system to work together in a way to give the best comfort, reliability, and energy economy, making it one of the best HVAC system deals available today.

Air Conditioning - HVAC
Filed Under HVAC | Comments Off
Andrew asked:
HVAC (pronounced either “H-V-A-C” or “H-vak”) is an initialism or acronym that stands for “heating, ventilating, and air conditioning”. HVAC is sometimes referred to as climate control and is particularly important in the design of medium to large industrial and office buildings such as skyscrapers and in marine environments such as aquariums, where humidity and temperature must all be closely regulated while maintaining safe and healthy conditions within. In certain regions (e.g., UK) the term “Building Services” is also used, but may also include air conditioning plumbing and electrical systems. Refrigeration is sometimes added to the field’s abbreviation as HVAC&R or HVACR, or ventilating is dropped as HACR (such as the designation of HACR-rated circuit breakers).
Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning is based on the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, and on inventions and discoveries made by Michael Faraday, Willis Carrier, Reuben Trane, James Joule, William Rankine, Sadi Carnot, and many others. The invention of the components of HVAC systems went hand-in-hand with the industrial air conditioning revolution, and new methods of modernization, air conditioning higher efficiency, and system control are constantly introduced by companies and inventors all over the world.
The three functions of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning are closely interrelated. All seek to provide thermal comfort, acceptable indoor air quality, and reasonable installation, operation, and maintenance costs. HVAC systems can provide ventilation, reduce air infiltration, and maintain pressure relationships between spaces. How air is delivered to, and removed from spaces is known as room air distribution.[1]
