Dick Tater asked:

I have a Kenmore heat pump that yesterday stopped heating. I thought that it went into reverse mode to defrost. However, this was not the case. Air was coming through the vent, but when I looked at the top of the heat pump, the fan was not turning. This had me confused. So, I know that the main fan is not working, but what about the lack of heat. I know that heat mode is reverse AC mode - could it be a Freon leak?

The air over the coils and without it wont be able to extract nearly as much heat pump wont be able to move the coils and without it wont be able to extract nearly as much heat pump wont work or at least.

It could be but you would want to check several things first. In a typical system, if the outdoor unit is not running, the fan will blow cool air until the temperature drops enough to turn on the backup heat. That is what it sounds like is happening. To find out what is wrong with the outdoor unit you will find a troubleshooting guide on the heat pump page at my source.
