need help asked:

It is 19 degrees out and I have a heat pump that is not working efficiently (or so I think). I have the temperature set at 75 degrees but it is only heating at 68 degrees. Is this pretty normal for heat pumps or do I need mine checked by a technician?

That sounds about right, they aren’t efficient when it get’s really cold.

I have been going through the same problem. here are some things to check.
      1. Is it pulling air through the filter? (it should actually suck the filter to the housing). if not your return line is broken somewhere and needs to be patched. this is not a hard task with a little common sense.
      2. are the heat strips working properly? the heat strips only come on once is starts getting really cold. when you turn it on emergency heat, the strips will also come on. so turn it on emergency heat and see if the air gets warmer coming out of the vent. if not the strips may be turned off (like mine were) or may be broken. the switch will be on the heating unit probably under a panel somewhere and it will look exactly like an electrical breaker. if you need more help, E-mail me at and I will give you some more guidance.

      Hope this helps
