How cool can my air conditioner get my house, compared to the temperature outside?

My air conditioner has been set on 60 degrees all day and my house is still 80 degrees.
It was about 97 degrees today, it is a central unit, very old but I am just hoping I don’t have to replace it since it is so costly. Thanks for all of your answers!
