Is there a circumstance where it would be impossible to determine why a Hvac compressor failed?

My heat pump is on its third compressor in 5 years. The first time it failed the technician said he could not find the cause and put in a new one. The second one has now failed less than a year after it was replaced. Is there any excuse other than incompetence for not finding the cause for a compressor failure.
