my air conditioner smells really bad, how do i clean it?

my air conditioner STINKS. it is a window unit. i live on the 4th floor of a building in the middle of a city and have no access to a yard or any outdoor area. the only suggestion for cleaning it i have found on the internet is to hose it off. how can i clean it inside my apartment and what part do i clean? it is only a year old.

      spray febreeze in it because it will make it smell better, and should kill dirt and bad odors inside which will also make it run a little better.

      Can you take it out and sit it in your tub or shower and clean it that way?
